Travel deeper into Cambodia’s culture

Destinations

Our goal is to make this meaningful style of travel more accessible in Cambodia. We know exactly how to build a true learning journey. Because of this, we refuse to sell generic travel packages just because they are popular. Instead, every itinerary we create is strictly guided by our core mission and the authentic stories of the destination..

By combining our vision with our on-the-ground expertise, we design journeys that spark personal growth and genuine cultural exchanges, benefiting both our travelers and the local communities we visit.

Why we create Skual Tours

Skual Tours exists to offer a more meaningful way to experience Cambodia.

Today, travel often moves too quickly. Beautiful places are seen, photos are taken, and people move on without truly understanding where they are. In Cambodia, this often means missing what matters most, the people, everyday life, and the stories shaped by resilience, history, and hope.

We believe the true beauty of a destination is found in human connection and slow-paced travel. It lives in daily livelihoods, quiet conversations, shared meals, spiritual traditions, and the stories people carry. These moments cannot be rushed or staged; they emerge when time, respect, and presence are given.

Skual Tours was created to slow travel down and invite travelers to participate, not just observe. Our experiences are designed to encourage listening, reflection, and genuine engagement with local communities, while honoring their dignity and lived experience.

The name “Skual” comes from a Khmer word meaning “to get to know.” It reflects our vision of creating tours and activities that allow guests to truly learn, connect, and walk away with meaningful experiences.

We work closely with local guides, artists, families, and community partners to create respectful spaces for cultural exchange. Our intention is not to present Cambodia as a product, but to share it as a lived experience.

Skual Tours is for travelers who want more than sightseeing. We work for those who wish to understand Cambodia through connection, awareness, and care. This is why we exist: To travel with purpose, to connect with people, and to experience Cambodia more deeply.

What does Skual [S’gual] mean?

Skual comes from the Khmer word ស្គាល់, meaning “to know”. It’s pronounced “S’gual”. In the Khmer language, there are several words with similar meanings, but Skual carries a deeper and more relevant meaning to our company’s vision and mission. “Skual” doesn’t just mean knowing something, it refers to the process of gaining knowledge through experience, effort, exploration, and learning. It’s about truly understanding something on a deeper level, not just at the surface.

We understand that the word Skual might be difficult to pronounce or unfamiliar to non-Khmer speakers. However, we intentionally choose to include a Khmer word in our name to reflect our identity and vision. We named our company Skual Tours for two main reasons:

  • We want our guests to truly get to know Cambodia through immersive experiences, personal exploration, and thoughtful reflection, especially the people, culture, and everyday life of people in the local communities. This process fosters connection, awareness, and personal growth.

  • We also aim to introduce travelers to the beauty and depth of Khmer language and culture. By simply learning the meaning of our name, our guests already begin their journey into understanding Khmer culture.

Our Team

Skual Tours is a small local team based in Battambang who share a passion for storytelling, cultural exchange, and meaningful travel. We believe the best way to understand a place is through the people who live there. Our team combines local knowledge, guiding experience, and a commitment to creating thoughtful travel experiences that connect visitors with the everyday life, history, and culture of Cambodia.

The participation of the local community is extremely important. We believe in building strong relationships and partnerships with local communities and local NGOs, which create a huge impact on the results of a learning trip. This process starts with a sense of collaboration with the community rather than seeing them simply as a tourism product. It means building a trusted relationship based on shared values and a clear process of working together.

  • Building trust by creating clear expectations and concrete terms and conditions with the local community ensures connections and benefits for both sides.

  • Valuing local expertise as well as creating exchange programs in order to explore the true needs of the community in tourism, while improving local skills and expertise to maximize high standards of quality.

  • Constantly visiting and celebrating appreciation with the community.

What make us unique

Many operators rush through highlights, focus on ticking boxes, and measure success by how many places are visited in a short time. Travelers admire the scenery, take photos, and move on, often without the time or space to truly connect. While this style of travel can be exciting, it frequently leaves little room to understand the people, everyday life, and stories that give a place its true meaning.

We believe this gap often begins on the tour operator’s side. Tour operators are the experts, while guests usually arrive with limited knowledge of the destination. Travelers naturally rely on guides and operators to shape their understanding of a place like Cambodia. This makes the way experiences are designed and delivered especially important.

When traveling in Cambodia, visitors are often invited to take part in local culture, trying traditional food, visiting markets, and even joining food tours. Many travelers believe that cuisine is an important window into understanding a country’s traditions and daily life.

But beyond food, one of the most fascinating parts of Cambodian culture is the presence of pagodas and Buddhist monks. For many travelers, monks spark curiosity and deep questions, such as Why do people become monks? Who can become a monk?

The Immersive Art Tour is a uniquely designed collaboration between Phare Ponleu Selpak and Skual Tours, created to welcome travelers visiting Battambang during Phare’s S’art Urban Art Festival 2025. This Art Festival is celebrated every two years in Battambang.

The tour beautifully integrates a guided journey with live theater performances by Phare students. Starting at Sangke Pagoda, the route takes you to the Lord of Battambang’s Residence, the Old Cinema, and Kondal Pagoda. Along the way, the tour uncovers the hidden history of Battambang, connecting historic events with local stories.
